When firefighters die, it's often after an incident, back at the station or at home. It seems that a number of firefighter fatalities from heart attacks happen after returning from the fireground rather than on the fireground. The importance of continuing the medical follow-up and monitoring after the incident is just as crucial as conducting it on the scene. Full Column

From the start of CPR in the 1950s and 1960s, through the development of defibrillation and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, the survival rate from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has been dismal and generally unchanging. Usually when this happens, it means that a fundamental concept of the care model is flawed. Recent research indicates this is the case and our current CPR model needs to reflect these findings.
