Thousands of residential tenants would go without life-saving carbon monoxide detectors for another year, under legislation backed by State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan.

Coan said more time is needed to design and install alarm systems at large buildings such as college dormitories, public housing complexes, jails, and nursing homes. He wants legislators to delay the deadline for installing the detectors from Jan. 1, 2007 until Jan. 1, 2008.

"This bill is saving people's lives, but we just have to do it in a reasonable amount of time," said state Representative Vinny deMacedo, a Plymouth Republican who filed the request. "We're just trying to move forward in a rational way to make sure all the units have carbon monoxide detectors without breaking the law."
