Researchers test firefighter cooling tech in Pa.

By FireRescue1 Staff

PITTSBURGH — With cardiac arrest killing more firefighters than anything else from year to year, researchers are conducting new research into ways to cool down crews quickly and safely.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are testing two new cooling techniques with the help of firefighters, according to WPTV.

One involves specially designed chairs with pools of water in the armrests.

Contact with the water transfers heat from the body to the water, cooling the firefighter.

Firefighters are also testing cooling vests that pump cold liquid through material near the body's core to cool it down.
