Cold weather basics

During cold, wet winter weather, it's obviously important to stay as dry and warm as possible.

Remember that the outer shell of protective clothing absorbs water and can freeze, while protective hoods absorb moisture including body perspiration.

Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cold weather use of SCBA, and make sure water doesn't seep into regulators or emmission valves. In addition, extra turnout gear should be available, especially gloves, while water-repellant footwear with good traction can help to avoid fireground accidents in freezing conditions.
